Art Opening - Danny MacMillan
Danny MacMillan is a young man with autism who grew up in Sussex, New Brunswick with his parents and two younger brothers. He showed an interest in creating images on paper as early as kindergarten and navigated the bewildering landscape of his complex condition with art as his compass.
Initially, he drew thousands of lamps, vacuum cleaners, and balloons – items that represented some of his obsessions. With the help of Alice Whitney, his first art teacher, he was able to expand his repertoire to other things he could see in his environment. When Alice retired, he began studying with artist and teacher Nancy Watters. He continues to have weekly sessions with her as his mentor.
Danny’s attention to and interpretation of detail lends a unique quality to his artwork. A myriad of shapes within his subjects gives them a fascinating texture. He likes to draw from photos, books, and still life, and his preferred medium is pencil crayon. Most of his subjects come from nature. His greeting cards and yearly calendars are popular items at Christmastime.
Danny currently lives in Saint John and attends Catena Jobs Plus full time. His hobbies, other than art, include swimming, bowling, and hiking.
The art exhibit by Danny MacMillan will open on Wednesday, July 6th and will be shown at the Capitol Art Gallery in the Capitol Theatre Lobby at 811 Main Street in Moncton until August 25, 2022. Entrance is free of charge.
