ECSQ
Founded in 2019, the Elm City String Quartet takes its name from Fredericton’s longtime nickname, “the Elm City,” and reflects both its strong local roots and artistic identity. The ensemble brings together violinists Victor Vivas and Mercedes Salazar, violist Mark Kleyn, and cellist Emily Kennedy, united by a shared passion for chamber music and a commitment to exploring the string quartet repertoire in all its forms.
Known for adventurous and thoughtful programming, the quartet pairs beloved classical works with new commissions, including several pieces by emerging composers from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. This focus on contemporary creation highlights their dedication to supporting and amplifying new voices across Atlantic Canada.
Versatile and deeply community-oriented, the members come from diverse musical backgrounds and perform everywhere from concert halls and galleries to intimate house concerts — always delivering expressive, engaging performances that connect closely with audiences.
