Tales of Charlie Brown Christmas
A Live, Interactive Jazz Performance featuring the J. Anthony Granelli Trio
Before it became a holiday classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas was almost never aired. CBS questioned everything from its jazz soundtrack to its unusual pacing. But when it finally premiered in 1965, audiences embraced it, and the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s music became legendary. Today, the soundtrack is quintuple-platinum and one of the most iconic jazz recordings in history.
Tales of a Charlie Brown Christmas brings that story to life on stage in a warm, immersive performance that blends live music, storytelling, and audience participation. Part concert, part behind-the-scenes journey, the show explores how this beloved music was created, nearly lost, and ultimately became a defining holiday tradition.
At its heart is a live jazz trio (bass, piano, and drums) performing the original soundtrack with intimacy, spontaneity, and swing. No backing tracks, no polish; just three musicians in deep musical conversation, re-creating the spirit of the original recording in real time.
Led by bassist J. Anthony Granelli, son of original soundtrack drummer Jerry Granelli, the performance also shares personal stories of growing up with this music as part of a family legacy. He is joined by pianist Nate Shaw, known for his expressive, deeply connected playing, and drummer Michael Sarin, a longtime fixture of New York’s jazz scene whose dynamic style keeps every moment alive and unpredictable.
This is not a passive concert; it’s a shared experience. Audiences are gently invited to take part through sing-alongs, call-and-response moments, and simple rhythmic participation, making each performance feel like a joyful, communal celebration of the season, much closer to how this music was first played in small clubs in San Francisco in the early 1960s.
Beloved across Canada with multiple sold-out runs, this evolving production continues to grow each year; remaining rooted in the warmth, humour, and humanity of the original music.
